Campaign For a Drug Free World

At StarBrite Dentalwe consider drugs a big issue in our community and have been working for years with the Drug Free World Organization to get the "Truth About Drugs" booklets out in volume into our community.

Heroin drug overdose deaths almost doubled between 2010 and 2014. One of the more hard hit areas is Anne Arundel County where county executive Steve Schuh declared a public health emergency and announced the creation of a Heroin Action Task Force. Maryland's governor has considered declaring a State Of Emergency on heroin overdoses for all of Maryland. This, of course, includes Montgomery County.

These actions follow on the heels of the efforts to decriminalize marijuana in Maryland last year. Add to this, the tendency for prescription medications to be abused in almost any healthcare profession. Fact: prescription drugs are the second-most abused category of drugs in the United States, following marijuana.

Per the White House's Office of National Drug Control Policy the best way to fight drug use is "Preventing drug use before it begins is the most cost-effective, common-sense approach to promoting safe and healthy communities . " And the best tool in prevention is education. Simple and straight-up education on the effects of drugs and what they really are.

The idea is to get the word out to kids before they become users and empower them with the truth, not the hype. And to do just this StarBrite Dental participated in Drug Free World's campaign to get the truth out about drugs for National Drug Awareness Month last October - we helped get out 20,000 anti-drug booklets!

Now we are upping the game! Our target is to use booklet drop boxes out in our local community centers, businesses, schools, shops and stores. Anywhere where people go - we want to spread the word. This is something that can be done by interested members of our community to stem the tide of drug abuse from gateway drugs, prescription medications and even hardcore drugs like heroin. We have booklets that cover all drugs specifically. There are even videos like this:
