Do You Have Old Crowns?

Are they cracked, loose or painful? Are you maybe worried that leaving them alone could lead to something worse in the future?

While it is true that crowns do not decay, the remaining tooth structure underneath of it can. Over time, new decay can start where your crown meets the tooth- even if you don’t experience any warning signs. And if the crown is loose, this can allow bacteria to enter in under the old crown causing the tooth structure to decay.

If your oral hygiene has been poor, or you have older crowns and have not been getting routine dental check ups, you could have decay beneath your crown and not even know it!

You do not have to wait until it gets worse, actually by then the decay may have caused irreversible damage as in the case where it reaches the nerve center of a tooth. Sometimes it results in a very painful condition called an abscess- where the area around the tooth nerve fills with puss and is swollen and extremely painful. Over The Counter pain medication usually can not handle this pain.

By evaluating your crowns at least every six months, you can take action to prevent decay, pain and possible root canals, or worse, losing your teeth.
