My Philosophy of Dentistry: A Message from a Rockville Dentist

Rockville Dentist Dr. Maryam Seifi
I’ve been a dentist in Rockville, Maryland, for 25 years. I started with 200 patients and one dental chair when I opened my office after dental school. From there, we’ve grown to see thousands and thousands of patients. Many of my patients have been with me from the beginning. When they had children, I ended up becoming their dentist as well. In some cases, I’m now seeing their grandchildren! (Scary, right?)

The Rockville area is an important part of my life, and the lives of my own family members. We’re deeply rooted in the community and love it here. I moved to Silver Spring when I was 17 and never left. I delivered pizzas locally through my college years. I visited Rockville often as a teenager. When I graduated from dental school, it was only natural for me to open a practice in the area.
My number one mission in dentistry is to take away the fear that patients may feel about it. Often, people have had bad previous experiences which affect how they view their oral health in the present. This is unfortunate, because it doesn’t have to be that way.

I want to provide my community with the most comfortable and pleasant dental experience possible—so they can lead happier and healthier lives.

Putting The Patient in the Driver’s Seat

My goal is always to put the patient in control of their own dental care. I want to educate them so they truly understand what’s happening and can make their own choices. Often, patients come to me feeling like they don’t have a choice—they were told they need some treatment and that there’s no other way. However, that’s simply not true. They always have a choice.

I believe that one of the most important duties of a dentist is to really communicate with their patients. After all, the patient’s dental issues are their issues. They have the right to understand them and make informed decisions.

Thus, I sit with patients for as long as necessary until all of their questions are answered. Sometimes, this can take 45 minutes! However, to me it’s vital. If a patient truly understands what’s happening with their own oral health, they can do something about it and they’re in the driver’s seat. If they don’t understand it for themselves, that’s when the frustration and anxiety sets in. And that’s not good for anyone.

Gentle Dentistry Every Time

I want every single one of my patients to experience gentle dentistry and a positive experience. I never want a patient to remember their dentistry as a horrible experience. With expert care and a gentle touch, it just isn’t necessary for it to be traumatic.

Therefore, I’m constantly focused on doing whatever it takes so that my patients are as comfortable as possible—happy and healthy.

Dentistry and Our Overall Health

A person’s mouth is part of their overall health picture. Our bodies are interconnected—nothing operates alone. Infection anywhere affects the body everywhere. Therefore, maintaining good oral health is an extremely important part of maintaining a healthy body overall.

As a dentist, I strive to look at the overall picture of a person’s health instead of just a small part. To me, it’s not just about a single tooth—it’s about how the health of that tooth affects the rest of their body. It’s about helping people lead happier and healthier lives overall.
