Fixed (Implant-Supported) Dentures

With all the improvements that have been made in dentistry and dental hygiene over the years, people have many more options for saving and replacing teeth than were available years ago. Still, there are times when an entire row of upper or lower teeth is lost, making a full denture the best option for replacement teeth.

Along with a full denture, of course, comes the need to keep it firmly in place. You’ve probably seen commercials or magazine ads featuring people who are smiling wide because of the latest denture adhesive they tried. Perhaps, they’re even holding an apple or some corn on the cob, with a big, healthy bite taken out of it.

That’s still the norm for a lot of people, but advancements in dental implant technology have made it easier for patients to get fixed dentures that stay in place permanently, no adhesives required. For patients in Rockville, MD, who are missing teeth and want an alternative to traditional dentures, the skilled and caring dentists at StarBrite Dental are ready to help.

About Implant-Supported Dentures

Attaching a denture to dental implants allows the denture to function like a natural set of teeth, without the worry of having them slip while talking or eating and without having to frequently adjust them for comfort.

When dental implants are used in combination with dentures, specially prepared dentures are clipped to the implants so that the denture is fully stabilized. Dental implants are placed in the bone of the jaw as a first step. These dental implants then serve as anchors for the dentures that will be provided. Therefore, the dentures won’t move or shift. No adhesives are needed. They look and act like natural teeth, which also means that a person can now eat foods that might be too difficult for a denture wearer to eat.

As with any procedure at StarBrite Dental, the process of getting a fixed denture begins with a thorough explanation and discussion of just why a fixed, implant-supported denture to replace missing teeth is right for your situation and just what you can expect along the way. After that, it’s on to the procedure itself. At StarBrite Dental, we maintain the highest standards of dental services, meaning that your dental implant procedure will be offered by dentists who constantly advance their skills. They are honestly concerned about your comfort. And they are interested in helping you achieve your goals for your own smile.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The first thing that needs to happen is the removal of any remaining natural teeth that are not healthy in the upper or lower arch. Your dentist will then perform a thorough analysis of your mouth and jaw, in order to plan out the placement of your implants and establish the contours and tooth size of your denture. Note: We can often supply you with a temporary denture so that you have teeth on the day of your dental implant surgery. Your permanent replacement teeth will arrive when your dental implants have fully healed.

Sometimes, it is discovered that a patient doesn’t have enough bone height to support dental implants. In those cases, a bone grafting procedure is done to increase the bone volume and make the jaw receptive to the implants. At the same time, if there is any problem with the health of the gums, teeth or bone, such as hidden infections or gum disease, that problem must be fully resolved before dental implant services go forward.

The number of implants needed will depend on the condition of your jaw, but the number is usually either four or six for both the upper and lower arches. The implants essentially serve as the roots for your new set of teeth and are made from titanium, a metal that bonds well with human bone.

After the Dental Implants Are Placed

Once the implants are in place, there is a healing and bonding process that needs to happen before the next step in the procedure can go forward. While you’re waiting for each dental implant to firmly establish itself, your dentist will provide some temporary teeth to help with chewing and so that you won’t feel self-conscious about the temporary absence of teeth.

When your dental implants have bonded well to the bone in your upper and lower jaw bones, your new fixed dentures will be ready to be put in place. There will be attachment points on your new denture that will connect with each dental implant. Your denture will either clip into those connection points and be removable, or it will be permanently fixed and only be removable by your dentist. You and your dentist will discuss these options and come to the right decision together.

Once you have your new replacement teeth, it is important that you continue to receive skilled professional care for your mouth, gums, bone and dentures. Regular visits to our office will enable us to examine the denture for any signs of wear, and take x-rays to verify that your bone structure and implants remain healthy. We will also check your gums to ensure that they are fully healthy. This is an important part of the long-term success of your implant-supported dentures.

"Staff is very kind, caring and put any anxiousness at ease. I, unfortunately, had neglected annual checkups for a few years due to previous negative experiences and the staff at Starbrite couldn’t have done better at making me feel comfortable. They work with you to find solutions both medically and financially and I don’t think I could have imagined an easier and more simple experience, especially going in with such anxiety. Thank you"
