Dental Scaling and Root Planing For Gum Disease

When you’ve had your teeth cleaned, you have experienced a type of scaling, the removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth. Scaling and root planing is a more intensive procedure that reaches under the gum line to treat advanced gum disease. As StarBrite Dental practitioners are dedicated to protecting your oral health, they may recommend scaling and root planing as the best way to preserve your teeth.

How Scaling and Root Planing Is Done

The first step in scaling and root planing is to explain the procedure to you. We want you to understand what we are doing so that you are as comfortable as possible with the procedure. Then, because your comfort is a high priority with our dentists and staff, we will numb the areas to receive this deep cleaning.

Scaling consists of cleaning away tartar accumulations below the gum line. Once this is complete, our skilled professionals will then smooth away any irregularities on the roots of the affected teeth. This root planing step eliminates areas where bacteria could easily create more colonies in the future.

Our dentists have many years of training and experience and are committed to providing a high quality of care with every treatment. When we provide scaling and root planing treatments or any other dental care, our intention is to fully address the cause of any dental problem you are having. The healing of your gums will be carefully monitored to ensure that your gum disease is fully resolved. We want you to hold onto every one of your teeth for your whole life.

“Very nice, professional, calming and knowledgeable. I appreciate everything Dr. Seifi and her staff have done for me. The first day I came in, she was able to squeeze me into her schedule to start my urgently needed dental work.
Highly recommended.”

Why Scaling and Root Planing Are Needed

When you receive scaling and root planing from a StarBrite Dental practitioner, you will be given precise instructions on how to care for your gums after this procedure. Your gums will be sore for a few days to a week so you should treat them gently. You can expect to be told not to consume hot drinks or food until the numbness is gone. Let your body rest for a day. Brush and floss gently for the first week.

Within a week, your gums should no longer be sore. There may be some sensitivity to heat, cold and sweets for a few weeks. This is normal. Finally, as your gums reattach firmly and closely to your teeth, you can know that you have done the best thing possible to reverse advanced gum disease.

If there are any problems or concerns after this procedure, our attentive and highly trained staff want to hear from you. Just call our office for advice or to arrange for a follow-up visit.
