“Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Glenview Mansion, Rockville MD:

The Origins

Today, the Glenview Mansion overlooks its green gardens with a sophisticated air. Yet, the proud property comes from humble origins. It originally belonged to the Bowie Family Farms, owned by Catherine and Richard Johns Bowie.
In 1838, they built a two-story house on top of the highest point of their farm. One could view the whole estate from the windows. Years later, this feature caught a young heiress’s eye.

In 1917, Irene Moore Smith and Dr. James Alexander Lyon moved in. They were quick to commission a makeover to suit their extravagant lifestyle. Six years later, architects Lochie and Porter transformed the farm into a fashionable neoclassical mansion fit for a princess. It became the meeting ground for the elite.

A Twist in Fate

After his wife’s demise, Dr. Lyon sold off the property in installments until 1954. The year represents Montgomery County Society’s victory to received ownership.

Then in 1957, the estate fell under the government of Rockville. It continues to do so and is part of the National Registry of Historic Places (secured in 2007).
