Effects of Untreated Dental Issues

Dental problems, like the following, have a way of worsening and getting more expensive when left untreated:

LONG-TERM TOOTH PAIN: Cavities in their early stages are easily treated with a filling. Left untreated, however, cavities grow larger and penetrate the tooth more deeply. This can lead to intense pain and infection. Medical studies confirm that localized oral infections can become systemic and jeopardize a person’s overall health.

MISSING TEETH: Clearly missing teeth can detract from a person’s smile but there’s another unseen, harmful effect. Teeth have an additional function to chewing; they also stimulate the jaw to keep it healthy. When you lose a tooth, the bone which supported that tooth, lacking stimulation, decreases in size and density.

The gums, in turn, also start to decline. The more teeth that are lost, the more your oral health is negatively impacted, affecting one’s ability to chew and even speak. The other downside to missing teeth is adjacent teeth start to shift into the empty space. This creates a domino effect causing multiple teeth to shift out of their proper position.

CRACKED TEETH: A cracked tooth can be caused by a large filling which weakens the walls of the tooth, an irregular bite, eating hard foods and, of course, an injury to the mouth. If the tooth is not treated, the crack may widen or deepen causing the tooth to break. A cracked tooth can also cause an infection in the gum around the tooth. Some patients may be unaware they’ve fractured a tooth. Common symptoms include sensitivity to hot and cold, pain when chewing and sudden shooting pains.
