Gum Disease Can Lead to Tooth Loss

Gum disease is totally reversible if caught early. Don’t ignore the signs.

You wouldn’t ignore an infected wound, right? Unfortunately, too many people ignore their own oral health warnings.

Do you have any signs of:
  • Gum Pain?
  • Swollen Gums?
  • Bleeding Gums?
  • Bad Breath?
  • Loose Teeth?
  • Bite Problems?
These are just some of the warning signs of gum disease. However, the disease can be present even without these symptoms. If you are concerned about gum disease, read on.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gums around your teeth. It’s a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Because it’s often painless, people sometimes don’t even know they have it.

When you eat and drink, bacteria can build up, leading to infection. The early stage of gum disease is called “gingivitis.” This is often identified by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Advanced gum disease is called “periodontitis,” which can lead to more serious problems.

Gum Disease and Overall Health

As gum disease gets worse, it can lead to bone and tooth loss. Teeth may become loose or more separated. The way your teeth fit together may change. If you wear dentures, you may notice they don’t fit as well anymore.

However, a much more serious problem is the fact that gum disease can affect your overall health. Infected gums have been linked to other health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.

Your mouth is a gateway to the rest of your body. Infected gums can spread bacteria to other organs, causing inflammation and disease.

Real Solutions for Gum Disease

The good news is that gum disease can be reversed, especially when caught early. At StarBrite Dental, we treat both mild or severe gum disease. We’re very familiar with it and get great results.

Treatment is done by a procedure called “scaling and root planing,” which is a deep cleaning that removes bacteria below the gum line where normal brushing can’t reach. Gum disease creates pockets between the gums and teeth filled with bacteria.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing first cleans out the bacteria from these pockets, slowing the infection. Next, we smooth the rough spots on the tooth’s root and surface. This makes it more difficult for bacteria to stick in the future.

Once we’ve gotten rid of the pockets of bacteria, the gums are able to fit tightly against the teeth as they should—thus keeping out new invasions of bacteria. You will once again have healthy, pink gums!
